Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism after Surgery (VTE)
This half-day symposium, held on April 11, 2011 was designed for orthopedic and general surgeons, surgical nurses, hospital pharmacists and other hospital based healthcare professionals. The goal of this symposium was to provide participants with the latest updates on venous thromboembolism prevention (VTE). A multidisciplinary approach was presented by experienced faculty of Indiana University School of Medicine and the Indiana University Health System.

Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:- explain epidemiology, morbidity and mortality and cost of VTE treatment;
- evaluate the risks and benefits of VTE prophylaxis options;
- select and use the best practices guidelines in assessing the patients for prophylaxis;
- explain Prominent Quality Organizations VTE Prevention measures and impact to patient care;
- demonstrate a best practices system team initiative for application; and
- summarize recent clinical trial findings regarding the safety and efficacy of novel oral anticoagulants for prevention of VTE.
