About Us
OUR VISION
The Division of Continuing Medical Education at Indiana University School of Medicine promotes excellence in physician professional development and effectively translates leading-edge research into medical practice through its continuing medical education program. In partnership with physician learners, Indiana University faculty, professional organizations and commercial partners, the Division of CME develops CME programs in a variety of formats to enable physicians to maintain and enhance their care and to improve patient outcomes through better patient care and disease prevention.
OUR MISSION
The purpose of the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Division of Continuing Medical Education (IUSM CME) is to provide lifelong learning opportunities designed to increase knowledge and competence and, to the fullest extent possible, to enhance the ability of physicians and other health care professionals to improve their performance and/or to improve patient- and systems-level outcomes.
OUR COMMITMENT TO QUALITY
Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), Indiana University School of Medicine, the Division of CME at Indiana University School of Medicine was commended by ACCME for excellence in overall program evaluation and needs assessment in 2007. Our full re-accreditation term runs through November 2011.
CONTENT AREAS
IUSM is a premier academic medical center and as the only medical school in Indiana, the School of Medicine offers a comprehensive, statewide scope of continuing medical activities across the spectrum of medicine and health care, drawing on the clinical and basic science resources represented by the school and its centers of excellence and research. The scope of activities involves the body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to the public. Educational content is evidence-based, references best practices that are supported by peer-reviewed literature and guidelines, and is free of commercial bias.
TARGET AUDIENCE
IUSM CME develops learning initiatives and interventions that target multiple audiences, depending on learners’ needs that have been identified, partners we work with and the activities themselves. Many locally targeted activities draw upon Indiana-based needs assessment data where IUSM faculty join Indiana health care partners to develop learning activities that are responsive to the needs of Indiana’s clinicians. While those needs are targeted, often they reflect the educational needs of physicians across the country and around the world. In addition, strategic partnerships with nationally recognized organizations enable us to work on a larger scale. Targeted audiences include the broad range of the medical profession, from full-time practitioners to academic physicians, as well as other allied health care professionals locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
TYPES OF ACTIVITIES
CME activities employ evidence-based adult learning principles that recognize different learning preferences and styles and target expected outcomes. Types of activities include live learning opportunities such as symposia, conferences, workshops, seminars, live webcasts, mini-fellowships and regularly scheduled sessions; enduring materials in print, multimedia, and Internet-based formats; tools for self-directed learning such as point-of-care (PoC) and performance improvement (PI) opportunities; and other teaching improvement and collaborative projects that utilize CME as part of multi-component strategies to improve population health status and outcomes. When possible, learning formats are highly interactive, include multiple exposures to the same content, and are sequenced for learning.
EXPECTED RESULTS OF THE PROGRAM
The School expects that as a result of its CME program, physician learners will acquire new knowledge, skills and attitudes that increase clinical competence and/or improve performance with the goal of improving patient care, safety and health outcomes. IUSM CME is committed to assessing the impact of its program and activities through multiple approaches, including qualitative and quantitative methods that track outcomes to ensure that these goals are met.
